Nutritional Requirements During the Moult

Understanding the nutritional requirements for your falcon during the moulting season is essential for a successful moult. Various high protein sources, supplements and water are crucial for optimum feather development and growth.

Protein

Falcons’ feathers are made up of a protein called keratin. Falcons require a high dietary protein level to grow new feathers during moulting. The exact amount of protein needed will depend on the species and the age of the falcon, but a diet that contains around 20-25% protein is generally recommended. Good protein sources for required falcons include lean meat, such as quail, pigeon, chicken and rabbit. It is important to avoid feeding falcons high-fat meats such as beef, as these can cause weight gain, which may interfere with the moulting process.

Supplements

During the moulting period, falcons require a range of vitamins and minerals to support healthy feather growth and overall health.

Calcium: Calcium is essential for the growth and development of strong bones and feathers. Supplemental calcium may be necessary for falcons not receiving enough through their diet.

Vitamin D: Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and utilization. Falcons may need additional vitamin D if they are not getting enough sunlight or if their diet is deficient in this vitamin.

Zinc: Zinc is an essential mineral for feather growth and overall health. Supplemental zinc may be necessary if falcons are not receiving enough through their diet.

Water

Water is essential for falcons during the moulting period, as it helps to keep the feathers hydrated and pliable, which supports healthy growth. Providing a clean water source is critical, and falcons should always have access to water. Changing the water more frequently may be necessary during hot weather to ensure it remains fresh. Monitoring your falcon’s water intake is also essential, as dehydration can interfere with the moulting process and overall health.

Falcon Spark is a fast and effective concentrated electrolyte formula that helps to prevent and treat dehydration and exhaustion in falcons. Highly palatable, the quail-flavoured supplement can be dusted directly onto feed items as a stress-free supplementation method.
